Close-up: Why do we need the Venice Film Festival?
Plot
A woman married to an important politician during Brazil’s military dictatorship is forced to reinvent herself and chart a new path for herself and her children after her family’s life is affected by a violent and arbitrary plot. The first collaboration between Fernanda Montenegro and Walter Salles has been 26 years since the release of Glavni kolodvor (1998), where Montenegro was nominated for the best actress award at the Oscars. Fernanda Torres and Salles previously worked together in Terra Estrangeira (1995) and O Primeiro Dia (1998).

(2024). "I'I’m Still Here" a film about a time when fear, censorship and torture ruled Brazil’s history, and which can never return. However, director Walter Salles handles the subject delicately, presenting a united and loving family that yearns for the return of a missing father and husband.

It is possible to relate to Eunice’s pain in those moments and also to imagine how cruel the military dictatorship must have been. The film has its bittersweet moments and builds a place where you feel close to that family, a place full of love and tenderness. Fernanda Torres’ performance is amazing, she really deserves all the nominations she gets this award season.
which attracts attention, brings joy and can bring tears
The entire cast is great, including the sublime Fernanda Montenegro as an older Eunice Paiva. The film is technically beautiful, with a stunning depiction of Rio de Janeiro in the 70s. I think I speak for many Brazilians when I say that it would make a lot of sense if Brazil were nominated for an Oscar with this film, but it’s still a must-see, the latest masterpiece of Brazilian cinema.
