American (English) French version
Plot
It follows Morgan, a single mother of three, as she uses her extraordinary mind to help solve a crime while rearranging evidence during her shift as a cleaner at the police station. HPI series (2021). Despite his very high IQ, excellent memory, and deep knowledge of the occult, Morgan makes a number of basic legal mistakes that anyone who has ever watched a TV legal show knows not to make. For example, in the first episode, she retrieves a document from a locked safe in the suspect-victim’s law office that would never be admissible in court – illegally obtained evidence. Nor can it be used to obtain other evidence, a violation of the “fruit of the poisonous tree” legal doctrine. In Episode 2, she has to be reminded to wear gloves before handling crime scene evidence, and in Episode 3, she removes all documentary evidence from the police station, completely severing the chain of custody and causing everything she removed to disappear.
admissible in court
HPI remake (2021). I waited 4 episodes, giving the show plenty of opportunities to prove itself. This is the exact same formula used for all “detectives”, “cops” or “law enforcement officers”. shows the sample. It’s more of a "light drama" vein than in more realistic shows, but it’s still the same formula. It’s The Finder, Elsbeth, So Help Me Todd, etc…
just in different packaging
If it’s “based on a French series”, it just means that the French are good at using the same tired, well-worn formula. The US shows a lot of abuse, that’s all. Man + Woman “successful”; team, one carefree and aloof, the other serious and unconventional, they clash but ultimately support each other. The clues are MAGICAL in nature and often nothing that the viewer, any viewer, can’t figure out…and there are sequences of who did it where the audience CAN’T figure out the outcome because they don’t know the magic yet ( and hidden) clues, but should have been there all along 2-5 minutes of main story opening… 30-35 minutes of random “incident”; it’s done like everything else… a 2-5 minute concluding main story scene to add next week.
wash, rinse, repeat
I am so tired of this overused formula. This type of series premiere can be interesting because it builds on the main story, but the formula pattern appears in episode 2. then it just repeats itself over and over as the show goes on – often the show is canceled long before the main story is resolved – which means the missing father will NEVER have any answers or conclusion in this series because it’s just " cheat line" stories to hold viewers over for the next week. Olsen and Sunjata do a good job, they fit the characters well.. some of the other actors (mostly the cops) not so much. And basically every episode has a lot of guests.
Who is hit or miss
Overall, it’s a gumption series…not really terrible, but not particularly deep or complex. I can see why some might like it, but I’d be surprised if it lasted this long.
